![]() Education Highway, the largest educational portal in Austria, is expanding its service by including the Norwegian Online Learning Platform Fronter. This new service, which was launched in Salzburg on November 22, will ensure that the Fronter platform is available to all schools in Austria. In the EU, training vocational teachers and trainers has become one of the main objectives of occupational training policies. Quality assurance and innovative teaching methods are considered indispensable. At Online Educa Berlin 2007, the European Training of Trainers Network (TTnet) will discuss the linked potential of IT-based learning environments and give best practice examples.
© ETF A round-table discussion on Thursday, November 29th aims at sharing experience and knowledge with conference participants on the role of the private sector in education and training reforms. The focus will be on sharing cases of good practice from the European Learning Industry Group (eLIG) and on partners from the Mediterranean as well as on identifying areas for future co-operation between the private and public sector. ![]() How does European citizenship and youth involvement converge in New Media? Radio Web Europe, a pioneer project of seven EU Member States promoting dialogue on European issues, provides the answer to this question. The multimedia podcasting service offers new ways to form and express opinions in a pan-European debate. However, knowledge management in this area is still in its infancy when it comes to internationally standardised learning opportunites. In collaboration with the e-learning consultancy common sense, the United Nations Environment Programme developed and implemented MENTOR, a web-based learning platform. Arndt Bubenzer from common sense provides insight into the concept and practical use of MENTOR in the field of environmental education. ![]() eCollaboration will be the key theme of IBM Germany´s presentations at this year’s Online Educa Berlin. Cardinali invites CLOs from leading corporations such as Volkswagen, Ikea, Ericsson, Schlumberger and L’Oreal to talk about the challenges for corporate learning in today’s knowledge society. ![]() The University of Applied Sciences Berlin (TFH) and the Kyrgyz Technical University of Bishkek (KGTU) are cooperating to build up a Bachelor’s study programme in the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering. Online study modules are being used to improve the language skills of teachers and students in this unique project.
VHA @ FU Berlin In 2006, the Freie Universität Berlin became the first university outside of the United States to offer access to the Visual History Archive of testimonies from Holocaust survivors and witnesses held by the Shoah Foundation Institute of the University of Southern California. Breaking new ground in teaching and research, the VHA combines its aim of preserving history for future generations with the use of innovative e-learning tools. ![]() Manresa, a Catalonian city of about 75,000 inhabitants, makes use of a simple but convincing teaching principle. Since 2001, the City Council has provided an ICT training plan for the elderly that combines technologies like PDA, GPS, Google Earth, Google Maps and flickr. Because computer literacy seems to be one of the basic skills of young people, the organisers thought it would be a good idea to match different generations and change common roles: The students would be the teachers and the seniors would be the students! Surprisingly, for most companies that took part in the survey, games-based learning then was either a non-starter or merely an interesting discussion point. Eighteen months on, with the phenomenon of Second Life and more 'noise' around serious games, Euan Mackenzie, co-author of the report, asks the same questions again. At Online Educa Berlin, he will reveal what has happened in the interim, contrast it to developments in other countries and look at where games-based learning may be heading. In fact, this rubric encompasses 23 million businesses that provide jobs for 75 million Europeans. Bringing e-learning as part of continuing education and training into this huge market remains a challenge. Online Educa Berlin features examples of robust e-learning models from Belgium, Finland, Greece and Spain aimed at meeting the needs of SMEs regardless of size or sector. ![]() Helping teachers to become democratic leaders with a strong presence in the classroom - whether physical or virtual - is the main aim of Ingemar Svensson, project manager at the Swedish Agency for Flexible Learning. He will give further insight into the work of his institution in the session “Teacher Training and the Use of ICT” on Thursday, November 29. ![]() Nearly all types of communication technology can be used as educational accessories, depending on the initiative and imagination of the organisers and teachers. Radio broadcasts in particular have great potential if combined with the Internet for the asynchronous delivery of content, says Professor Costas Tsolakidis from the University of the Aegaen. His team has developed a programme to help teachers in rural areas of Greece perform their duties in an innovative way using Internet Radio. He is also Chief Scientist Emeritus with NIIT Limited, India, one of the largest private educational institutions in the world. Sugata Mitra has become internationally known for his “Hole in the Wall” experiment, which he started in New Delhi in 1999.
