Easing in a New Era: OEB-Workshop on the “European Digital Education Agenda”
The digital education market is seeing dramatic changes, says Elmar Husmann, Public Policy Advisor at the European Learning Industry Group (ELIG). Social networks, increasing accessibility, as well as the advent of new devices, such as the iPad, will transform the market radically. But in order to leverage the potential of this industry, some of the ‘rules of the game’ will have to be aligned with European standards, Husmann argues. He will host a pre-conference workshop at OEB, entitled “The European Digital Education Agenda”. Here, he explains why regulation is the key to this process.

Education and Training Reforms in the Mediterranean Region

A round-table discussion on Thursday, November 29th aims at sharing experience and knowledge with conference participants on the role of the private sector in education and training reforms. The focus will be on sharing cases of good practice from the European Learning Industry Group (eLIG) and on partners from the Mediterranean as well as on identifying areas for future co-operation between the private and public sector.

London’s Local Authorities Save over £100m for Education
Brian Durrant claims that a strategic and collaborative procurement approach has enabled London local authorities to save millions of pounds while ensuring high-quality infrastructure in all London schools. He has helped to transform the way that services are acquired by schools in the UK, creating an organisation in the London Grid for Learning (LGfL) that has aggregated 2,600 schools within the London area into a single buying unit, generating significant cost-savings and accelerating the deployment of new technology.

E-Learning for Defence and Security
The 2nd Forum for E-Learning for Defence and Security is taking place in conjunction with ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN 2006. The forum is organised by The New Security Programme, which conducts research into the new security environment and provides a forum for discussion of its implications for civil society. This year’s forum will focus particularly on security-related applications of technology-assisted learning in civil society. Jody Westby from Global Cyber Risk, USA, will speak in the forum about ways and means of countering cyber terrorism with cyber security.

Learning Anytime, Anywhere, And at Any Age – How the United Kingdom Is Promoting Lifelong Learning Concepts
To support Lifelong Learning initiatives effectively, it is important to involve partners from all parts of society. Government agencies are responsible for the promotion of a national agenda for lifelong learning, which they do through the creation of national programmes to raise awareness of the subject. Public and private institutions as well as businesses also need to take an active role. The Pre-Conference Forum at ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN entitled “Lifelong Learning – Policy and Practice in the UK focuses on how lifelong learning can be implemented in the national context. Brian Merison from the British Learning Association tells us more about the British way of bringing forward lifelong-learning concepts.

Promoting Inclusivity in E-Learning
How can you participate in the knowledge society when you cannot see or hear? Can you enroll at a university programme when you are physically disabled? What about elderly people, who often cannot keep up with the pace of technological developments? In many situations, technology is not yet fully accessible to disabled or disadvantaged people, a sad situation considering the great opportunities it offers toward helping to overcome the gap that sometimes separates members of these groups from social and technological development. ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN 2006 is dedicating a conference track to the various aspects of inclusivity in e-learning.
