What are the real challenges to online learning?
Lack of time is often listed as the main reason for not using available online content. According to Nils, this is hard to accept, as the time necessary for a classroom session with the some learning objectives would usually demand even more time resources. The real contest is to offer online content at a quality level that is attractive enough to gain the interest of the user. This is a challenge to the instructional design of the individual learning steps. Even more emphasis has to be given to the implementation of the complete learning process. With the growing demand for time and cost effectiveness, the pre- and post-event self-study phases require content with a wide spectrum of activities to keep the interest of the learner. The latest experiences underline the necessity to include self- finding phases with search and reading activities as well as self-assessment. Such activities satisfy the curiosity. Self-learning is more than just reading a book or working through a learning program. Pilot courses have proven the need for a mix of well defined activities, formal learning chunks, and “wild card” search session that allow the learner to undertake unstructured search activities on his own and to learn-by-finding. Nils’ session at Online Educa Berlin - called “Supporting Management Development with Online Resources” - showcases a variety of generic and transferable solutions developed by the Bridge2thinK Group in close cooperation with Harvard Business School Publishing and clients in Europe and Australia. He presents four implementation solutions from well known companies in Europe. The use of short and business relevant cases studies is presented, as is canned video streaming of faculty seminars direct from the Harvard Business School and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Nils, with more than thirty years of experience in the business of technology-driven learning, is convinced that the need to learn, forget, and learn more will require that we in general embrace online learning methods. “It’s all about creativity and persuasion” he says. “Come and discuss with us at Online Educa 2006 in Berlin!”
